Frequently Asked Questions

What is the curbing process?

You will meet with one of our concrete curbing estimators who will find out what your landscape goals are. Going over all the specifics of the product, design, and options to enhance your landscape and explaining how concrete curbing will help in keeping your landscape beautifully manicured. Once your curbing project is scheduled our installers will meet with you the day they curb and assist you in the designing process. Spraying out a design for you to visualize and approve.

Ground preparation is completed using our bed edger to cut a 6” wide trenched area for the concrete mix to be extruded into.

Your concrete curbing will be mixed at your job site, ensuring you the best custom look possible. We used fiber meshing to reinforce the cement edging, increasing the overall durability from Idaho’s freezing and thawing conditions and life of the product.

Once mixed and color added (if desired) the mixture is fed into our machine and extruded into a beautiful continuous border for your landscape using the landscape curbing form chosen. Then is finished with our finishing tools or stamping to finish the installation. As an added precaution to ground movement expansion joints are cut 2⁄3 into the curb using a manufactures expansion joint cutter approximately every 2’ to 3’.

A cure and seal is then applied to any colored curbing if desired to help with color protection while curing, usually 28 days.

This process is normally a 1 day process, and when our crew is completed with installation the concrete curbing installers will clean up and remove any concrete debris left during install. There may be a small amount of concrete on the ground after installation, between the grass and new curb. It is difficult to remove this concrete when it is still wet. After 24 hrs, it can be picked up and thrown away. Since we do not include a return trip in the price, we ask that you take a few minutes to remove the excess concrete next to curb.

Please view our concrete curbing information sheet for all before and after curbing install requirements and other specific information to curb care and concrete curbing warranty form attached.

The above process is based on a normal install. All landscapes and designs are different and may require additional steps or material depending on the individual curbing project. Your estimator or installer will inform you of any changes that may be needed before curbing installation.

Where do I buy the pieces for concrete curbing?

Concrete curbing is not pieces or sections. The lines you see approximately every 2’-3’ are expansion joints. Our curbing is a continuous curb that is extruded on site directly into place.

Does the curbing installation damage my lawn or flowerbeds, and do I need to prep anything?

There will be no damage to your landscape. Once you approve the design of your flowerbeds we use our bed edger to cut a 6” wide trenched area for the curb to be extruded into so you have a free flowing curb line.

How is the curbing colored?

We have a few different options to choose from. The most popular is Integral color. This color is mixed in with the concrete mix. This will give you color through the curb, for ex: if your mower hits the concrete curbing you will NOT have a grey color underneath the surface. This color will not peel off or disappear over time. You may have some fading, but this is normal. A sealer can aid in the lifetime of the color and we recommend sealing every year or as needed.

Does the curbing keep grass out of the flowerbeds?

Yes, concrete curbing is a concrete edge that is 6” wide and 4” tall. Our concrete molds are designed to keep your grass from growing into your flowerbeds and retain your flowerbed ground cover.

Can your children or pets damage the curb?

Yes, your newly installed curb is vulnerable during the first 24 to 48 hrs after initial install. It is important to keep children, pets etc., away from your newly installed curb. If you have a sprinkler system we ask that you turn your system off 24hrs before install and to leave the system off for a minimum of 24 to 48 hrs (depending on weather). If the concrete curb is damaged we are able to fix it, however there will be an additional fee for this service. It is ok to rake your flowerbed ground cover up to the curb a few days after install.

Is curbing easier to design with than Rail Road Ties?

Concrete curbing is great for most landscapes. Curbing is extruded out of a rolling machine and is easily maneuvered. Providing your landscape with the curves, circles and a design that will beautify your landscape. If there is an area that the machine is unable to complete your estimator or installer will explain the reasonings.

What about frost and ground movement?

Concrete curbing is a continuous piece of concrete. We reinforce our curb with a fiber meshing and place control joints every 2’ to 3’ with our joint cutter that controls the depth of our cuts for the control joints. This is designed to control any cracking of the curb during shifting periods and colder months. If the curb should break it will be at the control joints and can be repaired for a fee.

Concrete curbing is a decorative landscape border and will move during the freeze and thaw cycle as well as ground movement of any underlying issues. Such as, but not limited to (tree roots.)

How deep do you dig and is there a footer?

Our installers use a bed edger that trenches a 6” wide area approximately 2 1⁄2” down. There is no footer. The curbing is concrete and acts as its own footer.

What is the best form to use?

We offer 3 form styles. Mowers edge, Slant, or Block. All three forms will act as a landscape border and each form will have advantages that your estimator or installer will go over which form may best suit your landscape design.

Decorative Mower’s Edge: Specially designed with the lawn mower in mind. The rounded taper allows for the wheels of the mower to gently roll over the curb helping you with edging.

Decorative slant: Specially designed with lawn mowers in mind. The rounded taper allows for the wheels of the mower to gently roll over the curb helping you with edging.

Decorative curb/block: This curb is ideal for raised flowerbeds where deep potting soil or other mixture is preferred. The height of this border can be adjusted to give you a wonderful look.
